The Power of Science: Inside the incredible effort to stop COVID-19

For more than a decade, the Ragon Institute has advanced the fight against the toughest diseases, from HIV to tuberculosis. In 2020, the team faced a new foe—and triumphed. Discover the never-before-seen story behind the development of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine.

About the Ragon Institute

The Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard brings together scientists and engineers from diverse fields to better understand the immune system and support human health. Our mission is to harness the immune system to prevent and cure human disease.

The Ragon was officially established in 2009, with a donation from the Phillip T. and Susan M. Ragon Foundation. Throughout our history, our flexible funding structure has enabled us to be nimble in our approach to targeting new illnesses and capitalizing on emerging breakthroughs. Our focus is on immunology and global infectious disease, which began with an early focus on HIV.

We now have six priority research areas: HIV/AIDS, Global Infectious Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Development, Basic and Applied Immunology, and Clinical Studies. We also have an emergency priority area, COVID-19.

Our fuel is cross-disciplinary collaboration, breaking down the barriers between experts ranging from computational biologists and bench scientists to clinicians and community liaisons. Our strength is in the people we bring together, representing wide-ranging areas of expertise and the unparalleled excellence of our partner organizations: the Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. At the Ragon, we’re building collaborative models that are transforming human health on a global scale.
