As the winds of reformation blow at the end of the Edo period and the American Civil War comes to a close, former Black slaves, now set free, set out on a boat for Africa, only to drift ashore in a small feudal domain in Japan. With Japan under a policy of national isolation, a local official, not knowing what to do with them, puts them in jail. The lord of the domain, Okubo Noriyoshi (Yudai Chiba), however, is a man brimming with curiosity, and is entranced by the music the men play.
