Of all the families deported to the extermination camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Ovitz family was one of the only ones to survive with no loss of life. The Ovitzes were Jews from Transylvania in Romania. Seven of them – sisters and brothers – were affected by a special kind of dwarfism. Theirs was the largest family of persons of short stature in Europe. As a result, they became the favorite ‘guinea pigs’ of Auschwitz’s Angel of Death, Josef Mengele.
