A one-person show performed by singer, composer, pianist, and Oakland native Alex Taite featuring new and original arrangements of traditional Negro Spirituals, aiming to highlight their historical and cultural significance.
Blending music and storytelling, the show explores spirituals’ origins in the brutal realities of slavery – initially sung to pass the time, or maintain hope. These songs integrate African rhythmic and emotional elements, with European harmonic and religious influences, creating a uniquely American art form of resilience, faith, and community.
Exploring how our modern popular American music owes its entire existence to the trauma of those first slaves who were just trying to pass the time in the fields or lend some comfort in a dark room, the work showcases spirituals’ emotional depth reinterpreted through contemporary arrangements.
Deepening the audience’s understanding of their historical importance and cultural influence, the show concludes with an interactive talk-back, fostering engagement and reflection on the ongoing significance of these traditions.
About Alex Taite
Third-generation musician Alex Taite studied keyboard, composition, and vocals at Pepperdine University. A SF Opera Chorus member, he shares his musical passion with the community by teaching, directing, consulting, arranging and performing.
