Expert Talk with Mr. K Raja Gopal, CEO & Whole Time Director, Reliance Power Limited.

Mr. K. Raja Gopal is a postgraduate in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration, with over 39 years of industry and leadership experience in both public and private sector organizations. He started his professional career with the telecom cable manufacturing giant, Hindustan Cables and worked in various functional areas. He subsequently took up leadership positions in private power sector and has a proven track record in competitive bidding, execution and operation of large IPP projects. Over the years, Mr. Raja Gopal has built professional teams in leading corporates, guiding them in innovation, risk mitigation and resolution of PPA disputes with State Utilities, to steady operations and create profit making power assets. 

Mr. Raja Gopal is currently the CEO & Whole Time Director in Reliance Power, spearheading an operating portfolio of about 6,000 MW with thermal, solar and wind projects including Sasan UMPP which is world’s largest integrated coal mine and power project holding a number of performance and safety records in power generation and mining. On the project development front, Reliance Power and Japanese Energy major JERA, through their JV developing a new gas-fired power generation project in Bangladesh, which has recently achieved Financial Closure with group of Lenders including JBIC (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) and ADB (Asian Development Bank). Prior to joining Reliance Power, he was CEO in Lanco Group holding the responsibility for growth in generation capacity and new businesses like Power Trading, Operation & Maintenance, etc. 

Known for his clear insight of sectoral issues, practical vision and fostering of strong relationships, Mr. Raja Gopal was Chairman of Association of Power Producers (APP) for two years, tackling various challenges faced by the IPP sector. He also served as a member of National Committees on Power in CII and FICCI, New Delhi.
