Information

Functionalization is a core competence of Fraunhofer IFAM. Functionally integrated components and surfaces were developed in the Smart Systems department, which has comprehensive know-how and the latest technologies with a focus on ink and paste development as well as printed electronics and sensor technology. The fields of application range from automotive engineering and aircraft manufacturing to energy and medical technology.
Fraunhofer IFAMFraunhofer IFAM is one of Europe's most important research institutions for adhesive technology, surfaces, shaping and functional materials. At the six locations of our institute - Bremen, Dresden, Oldenburg, Stade, Wolfsburg and Braunschweig as well as in the test center for maritime technologies on Helgoland - we put our central principles into practice: scientific excellence, application-oriented technology orientation, measurable benefits for the customer and guarantee highest quality. Our more than 700 employees, who work in over 20 departments and numerous working groups, combine their broad technological and scientific knowledge and expertise in core competencies: metallic materials; polymer materials; surface engineering; adhesive technology; shaping and functionalization; electromobility; and automation and digitalization. These core competencies – individually and in combination with each other – are not only the basis of our strong position in the research market, but also for future-oriented developments that benefit society. Most of the products, processes and technologies we develop are intended for industries where sustainability is particularly important: in the aviation industry, the automotive sector, energy technologies, medical technology and life sciences as well as in maritime technologies. The solutions developed at Fraunhofer IFAM are also used in various other industrial sectors, including mechanical and plant engineering, electronics and electrical engineering, shipbuilding, rail vehicle construction, the packaging industry and the construction sector.
