Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin - Turning Perovskite Innovation into Impact: The Solar TAP Approach

Perovskite Connect October 2026
TechBlick Event

Information

The rapid development of perovskite photovoltaics has created unprecedented opportunities for next-generation solar energy technologies. However, translating record laboratory efficiencies into scalable, reliable, and commercially relevant products remains a major challenge. Accelerating this transition requires not only innovative materials and device concepts, but also scalable manufacturing approaches, advanced characterization, automation, and strong collaboration between research and industry.

Solar TAP (Solar Technology Acceleration Platform) is a Helmholtz initiative designed to accelerate the development and commercialization of emerging photovoltaic technologies, with a particular focus on perovskite and organic solar cells. By connecting leading research institutions, industrial partners, and advanced research infrastructures, Solar TAP provides an integrated environment for translating scientific developments into application-oriented photovoltaic technologies.

The platform bridges the gap between laboratory-scale research and industrial implementation through collaborative development projects, automated fabrication platforms, scalable deposition technologies, advanced characterization capabilities, and rapid prototyping workflows. Solar TAP supports the development of high-performance photovoltaic devices while addressing key challenges related to reproducibility, process optimization, upscaling, stability, and manufacturability.

A particular focus lies on enabling new photovoltaic form factors and applications, including lightweight, flexible, semitransparent, and multifunctional perovskite solar technologies for integration into buildings, transportation, consumer products, agriculture, and other emerging applications.

At Perovskite Connect 2026, Solar TAP aims to connect with researchers, technology developers, equipment manufacturers, material suppliers, industrial partners, entrepreneurs, and investors working to advance perovskite photovoltaics. We invite the community to explore collaboration opportunities and join an ecosystem designed to accelerate the transition of promising perovskite technologies from scientific breakthroughs toward scalable manufacturing and real-world applications.

Helmholtz-Zentrum BerlinSecuring a climate-friendly energy future is one of the greatest challenges facing our society. Through research and innovation, we at HZB are helping to develop solutions and support the scientific community in realizing this goal. We research and develop complex materials that help to master key challenges such as the energy transition and resource scarcity, and thus secure our long-term prosperity. To achieve this, we are driving forward the discovery of new materials and the development of innovative technologies, together with leading partners from research and industry in Germany and around the world. As part of our mission, we operate state-of-the-art research infrastructures and instruments, in particular the light source BESSY II, which provides synchrotron radiation over a wide energy range: here we record an average of 2700 visits from guest researchers from 28 countries per year. At HZB, we investigate how the macroscopic properties of materials arise and which microscopic structures and processes are responsible for this. This understanding is a prerequisite for developing materials with customized properties and functionalities. We research materials and technologies that enable a reliable and sustainable energy supply - from new types of solar cells and innovative battery storage systems to catalytically active materials for the production of green hydrogen as an energy carrier. We are also developing highly efficient quantum materials that could revolutionize the information technologies of the future.
