nsm Norbert Schläfli - Development of a Modular Roll-to-Roll Research Platform for Perovskite Solar Cells

Electronics RESHAPED Berlin October 2026
TechBlick Event

Information

The fabrication of perovskite solar cells requires highly reproducible coating processes together with precise control of drying conditions and process atmosphere. At the same time, research platforms must provide the flexibility needed to evaluate new materials and process sequences while supporting the transition from laboratory-scale research to pilot-scale manufacturing.

This presentation describes the development and implementation of a customized roll-to-roll research platform for a research institute. The focus is on the modular system architecture, the integration of precision slot-die coating, controlled drying and atmosphere management, and recipe-based process automation. In addition, the presentation discusses the engineering challenges associated with web handling, process stability, and data acquisition, highlighting their role in achieving reproducible process development.

Using this project as a case study, the presentation demonstrates how a flexible and modular research platform can accelerate process optimization, enable scalable manufacturing strategies, and provide a foundation for future developments in perovskite photovoltaic technologies.
