England has a vibrant research and development ecosystem, with well-developed research infrastructure and research expertise within our health and care workforce. While the NHS supports research and its delivery, it is important that the cost of that research is also identified and properly funded through good research finance management practices. We present NHS England’s research finance management guidance, co-produced with research sector colleagues, and due for publication in April 2024.
This guidance highlights the benefits of research including commercial research, describes key functions and processes, and sets out what good research finance management practice looks like so that those organisations who need to host and manage research funding will be able to do so in confidence. It supports all NHS organisations across various interfaces and settings to maximise the value of good research finance management for the benefit of their population’s health and care and, through co-ordination across ICSs, for national and international impact. It supports organisations that do not have R&D finance departments or have limited access to research finance resources or expertise to help build and develop their understanding in this area and to improve sector-wide delivery and best practice.
This new guidance will support the response to Lord O'Shaughnessy review into commercial clinical trials relating to activities through streamlined, efficient and innovative clinical research.
