RAMI Technology Mapping Workshop

This workshop, hosted by Fusion for Energy, will provide a unique opportunity to explore the current status and key development needs on the road towards sustainable and commercially viable fusion power in the area of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Inspectability (RAMI).

The fusion sector is entering an unprecedented phase of acceleration. Ambitious public programmes, next-generation demonstration facilities, and a rapidly growing ecosystem of private fusion companies and startups are targeting increasingly aggressive timelines to deliver commercial fusion energy. However, achieving plasma performance milestones alone will not be sufficient. Commercial success will ultimately depend on the ability of future fusion power plants to operate reliably, with sufficiently high plant availability to ensure a competitive Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). Without robust RAMI strategies, even technologically successful reactor concepts risk becoming economically unviable.

Experience from complex nuclear and industrial systems consistently demonstrates that reliability and maintainability considerations must be integrated from the earliest design stages rather than treated as a downstream activity. Future fusion plants will operate in highly challenging environments involving radiation damage, thermal and electromagnetic loads, material degradation, remote handling constraints, and limited access conditions. RAMI therefore becomes a fundamental enabler for fusion deployment: reducing critical failure rates, enabling predictive and condition-based maintenance approaches, ensuring efficient inspection capabilities, minimizing downtime, and allowing maintenance and repair interventions to be completed within the strict time allocations assumed in plant performance and economic models.

Participants are invited to contribute, learn and network across a broad range of RAMI-related topics including: reliability engineering methodologies, availability assessment and modelling, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), probabilistic risk assessment, maintenance concepts and optimization, maintainability-by-design approaches, remote maintenance strategies, digital twins, predictive maintenance and AI-enabled diagnostics, health monitoring systems, inspectability requirements, degradation mechanisms, component lifetime prediction, data-driven reliability methods, reliability qualification methodologies, accelerated testing, spare parts strategies, operational feedback, system integration, and RAMI approaches for future DEMO and commercial fusion facilities.

The main objectives of this workshop are to:

• Identify R&D opportunities and technology gaps,

• Foster collaboration and partnerships across industry, research organizations and the fusion community,

• Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and operational experience.


The workshop consists of two sessions:

• An online kick-off meeting held on 14th October 2026 (0.5 days). MS Teams Meeting Link will be emailed to registered participants.

• An in-person meeting on 3-4th December (1.5 days) to be held at F4E in Barcelona or Granada (TBC at a later date).
