Fibre optic for railway monitoring

Fibre optic for railway monitoring

Innovation Project and Competitiveness

Information

Fibre optic deployed along the track or in perimeters can offer additional functionalities to railway managers. DAS (distributed acoustic sensing) technology scans the fibre optic with thousands of light pulses every second and analyses the phase changes produced by acoustic waves in search of non-linear effects. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to do train detection and tracking, or detect intrusion or falling objects in tracks. This technology is also applicable in other scenarios, such as roads, and has been successfully tested in the European Innovation project Transforming Transport. Additionally, the use of fibre optic with DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) technology can be applied to monitor infrastructure temperature.
