No, I am not trying to be cute! These words belong to Prof. Charles N. Reilley, from UNC Chapel Hill; one of the true giants of analytical chemistry of all time. Reilley used this phrase to urge the modernization of the analytical chemistry curriculum in his 1965 Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry address.
Following his lead, in this presentation, I will provide a personal historical perspective of how our work/journey has evolved over the past 42 years from the use of chemically modified electrodes to the development of operando methods in electrochemistry. Emphasis of our early work will be on analytical applications of chemically modified electrodes, sensors and biosensors. Our most recent work will focus on energy systems including fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries. The presentation will conclude with an assessment of future directions and opportunities.
