Decoding Odour Perception: Implicit Neurological Pathways in Sensory Analysis
Information
Odour perception results from complex physiological olfactory processes and subjective experiences. Traditional explicit methods, like sensory analysis, assess parameters such as hedonic tone and intensity, while implicit techniques, including EEG and ECG, reveal subconscious emotional and cognitive responses.
This study integrates both approaches to evaluate functional fragrances in masking malodours in home and personal care products. Trained panellists assess odours at varying fragrance concentrations using dynamic olfactometry. Two data curves are generated: explicit ratings (hedonic tone, intensity) and implicit measures (valence, arousal via EEG/ECG). Comparing these identifies correlations and optimal concentrations for a positive hedonic effect.
Part of the SNIFFCON project (Eurostars 3—Call 6), this work refines methodologies for a more holistic understanding of how fragrances impact perception and emotion.
