Information

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Discuss current statistics and trends for surgical site infections (SSI), including new targets for 2020, impact of SSI on quality of care and hospital reimbursement.
  • Identify modifiable and non-modifiable factors that influence SSI risk.
  • Discuss components of a successful SSI reduction program, including guideline-supported pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative interventions

Why this is important:

Despite advances to optimize infection prevention, the burden of surgical site infections (SSIs) still remains and is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. SSIs are the #1 most costly Hospital Associated Infection in hospitalized patients, totaling 1.5 million each year. Targeting SSI prevention is a national priority.   This learning program will provide an overview of the pathogenesis, classification and management of SSIs. Associated risk factors and current statistics regarding SSIs will also be reviewed. The economic impact on patients and institutions, as well as the impact of SSIs on quality of care and hospital reimbursement will be discussed, along with components of a successful SSI reduction program.
