Free Linux OS for the community, by the community
AlmaLinux was born after RedHat shifted resources away from downstream CentOS Linux, and cut short the promised 10 year lifespan of CentOS 8 by 8 years. Started in January of 2021 by a group of people who were heavily involved in building operating systems or the greater community, AlmaLinux was the first CentOS Linux replacement to launch after the announcement. We released AlmaLinux OS 8.3 in March of 2021, and our adoption has exploded since then.
AlmaLinux OS is an open-source, community-driven Linux operating system. AlmaLinux OS is an enterprise linux distribution that is binary compatible with RHEL®, but guided and built by the community. As a standalone, completely free OS, AlmaLinux OS is funded and supported by over 30 corporate sponsors, including Platinum Sponsor Members CloudLinux and Cybertrust Japan, and who have promised to maintain the 10 years of support for each major version of AlmaLinux. Ongoing development efforts are governed by the members of the community and are not controlled by any sponsor.
The AlmaLinux OS Foundation is a 501(c)(6) non-profit created to own and manage everything to do with AlmaLinux, and for the benefit of the AlmaLinux OS community.
