China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong), Central - Wan Chai Bypass - Tunnel (Slip Road 8 Section)

Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (CWB) is one of the major infrastructure projects in Hong Kong. The project was the construction of a 4.5km dual 3-lane carriageway, which 3.7km of it is tunnel section, along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. The Slip Road 8 Section, as part of the CWB project commenced in 2013, involving temporary reclamation and cut-and-cover tunnel construction at the existing Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter (CBTS) and road works under the IEC and next to the Victoria Park. The excavation works of the 300m long Mainline Tunnel were challenging, with over 35m depth below sea level and the cofferdam size of 250m x 50m at the CBTS. Furthermore, 420m long Slip Road 8 is an underpass tunnel at land side and merges to connect with the marine Mainline Tunnel. Its connection to the mainline tunnel is end up with a very long merging section. The existing traffic flow of the Island Eastern Corridor was maintained during tunnel construction. Another phase of the project highlight was the massive concrete cutting at the cut-off of diaphragm walls underwater, which was a breakthrough innovation in the construction industry in Hong Kong.

This award seeks to recognise excellence in delivery of a tunnelling project or tunnelling-related element of a project over the value of $500M that was completed between July 2019 and July 2020 Judges will be looking to reward the project that best meets or exceeds the design brief and/or client expectation but that also have sought to advance industry best practice and have worked in a truly collaborative way.
