About this entry
Entry Title
MTR Shatin to central link contract 1121 immersed tube tunnels
Long Description of Entry
The contract is part of the new Shatin to Central Link project with Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation as the project manager, which will provide a new railway link between the North East New Territories and Hong Kong Island. Consisting of 1.66km of Immersed tube tunnel (IMT) under Victoria harbour between Hung Hom and Causeway Bay, the contract is a design and build contract with Penta-Ocean – China State Joint Venture the main contractor and Arcadis engineering the contractors designer. At the North the IMT connects to a 94m long cut and cover tunnel, which was constructed within a marine & land cofferdam situated underneath a 6 lane road viaduct and tightly sandwiched between the support piles of the viaduct. At the South the IMT connects to the already constructed tunnel, below the Causeway Bay Typhoon shelter (CBTS), in a fully submerged marine cofferdam.
The IMT was pre-fabricated in Shek O located at south east of Hong Kong Island, using an old quarry as the casting basin. The pre-fabrication was carried out in one batch of total 11 units. The IMT was installed on a gravel bed in a trench across the busy Victoria harbour and inside the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter which required fairway diversions and relocations of vessels in the typhoon shelter.
