Project Pitch
Liberia Coastal Corridor: The Liberia Coastal Corridor (Grand Bassa–Maryland) forms part of the Trans–West African Highway linking Dakar to Lagos, connecting southern Liberia to Côte d’Ivoire’s San-Pedro Port. Trade along the corridor is constrained by poor road conditions, lack of a permanent Cavalla River crossing, and non-physical barriers such as checkpoints, inefficient customs, and inadequate border equipment. These challenges increase transit time and costs, limiting regional trade. The project addresses these constraints in line with NEPAD, SSATP, and ECOWAS PRTP objectives to strengthen regional transport networks, promote seamless freight movement, and support economic and social development. The Liberia Coastal Corridor will also facilitate overland traffic flow between the West-central and Southern parts by connecting the Port of Buchanan, Port of Greenville, and Port of Harper, and by extension between the ECOWAS Member States. The Project is expected to improve transit and accessibility of the communities in the project’s zone of influence to markets and social services. The expected outcomes include (i) reduced transport cost; (ii) enhanced potential for trade, thereby contributing to poverty reduction among communities on the corridor and the region as a whole; and (iii) improved road safety.
