Thermal conductive grease or thermal interface materials or heat sink compounds are chemical compounds which are used as an interface between heat sinks and heat sources in order to promote efficient heat transfer between them. Since the contact surfaces of these two are not perfectly flat, there are gaps present in between which reduces cooling performance of the heat sinks. The flowability of thermal conductive grease helps eliminate these air gaps which act as a thermal insulator and maximise heat transfer.
Thermal conductive grease doesn’t add mechanical strength to the bond between heat sinks and heat sources. For that they have to be coupled with a mechanical fixation mechanism such as screws. Glocot Chemicals recommend use of Kooltherm RTV 4547 for efficient heat dissipation along with bonding.
