Project Pitch
Western Railway Line
The project consists of modernizing and extending Ghana’s Western Railway Line by converting the entire corridor to standard gauge (1,435 mm). It combines the rehabilitation of existing sections (brownfield) with the construction of entirely new segments (greenfield). The main sections are: Takoradi–Huni Valley (88.9 km, nearing completion), Huni Valley–Dunkwa–Awaso (147.3 km), Dunkwa–Obuasi–Kumasi (103.8 km), and the greenfield Awaso–Nyinahin section (60 km), developed to serve future bauxite mining operations. The Nyinahin–Eduadin section (63.3 km) is not planned due to insufficient traffic potential.
The line is designed for intensive freight traffic, with a 25-ton axle load, operating speeds of 80–100 km/h, and technical standards compliant with AREMA and EN norms. The infrastructure includes engineering structures, bridges, hydraulic works, station modernization, as well as signaling and telecommunications systems.
