Information

TransAlta is a leader in wind power generation, being the first large-scale utility company to invest in wind energy, including the first ever wind projects built in Canada. We are also Canada’s largest producer of wind energy with sites in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, and we continue to expand the development of this fuel source. We currently own 21 wind farms, including 907 wind turbines with the capacity to generate 1,419 megawatts (MW) of wind power — this is the equivalent of powering more than one million homes, with another 692 MW under development. In 2013, we entered the United States wind market, acquiring our 144 MW Wyoming Wind facility, and acquired our 50 MW Lakeswind facility in Minnesota in 2015. These acquisitions support the overall strategy of growing TransAlta’s renewables platform and diversifying our global presence. It also allows us, as Canada’s largest wind operator, to bring our expertise and experience to new markets.

In 2014, TransAlta and Horizon Power entered a long-term supply contract, resulting in TransAlta’s newest addition to the fleet; the 150 MW South Hedland Power Station reaching commercial operation in 2017. South Hedland Power Station actively supports the iron ore industry by supplying efficient, reliable gas generation to the region. We now provide generation to customers across Western Australia, from facilities connected to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), the North West Interconnected System (NWIS) and off-grid load customers.
