Carbon Reduction Champion
Information
The 23 Ground Engineering IPT are delivering technical excellence in the single biggest geotechnical contract in the UK while building a lasting sustainability legacy that will be passed on to next phases of HS2. By working collaboratively as one integrated team, routinely using the carbon emissions calculation tool, applying the industry recognised carbon reduction hierarchy and with sustainability embedded into the culture and mindset of the design and construction teams, the IPT achieved elimination of a large number of heavily engineered heave and settlement mitigations for the C23 mainline earthworks assets adding great value for the project and resulting in a total of over 82,000 tC02e savings. Moreover, the team successfully de-risked EKFB’s mass haul allowing for 3,500,000m3 site-won material to be re-used as mainline embankment fill and foundation treatment while also reducing the lime and cement binder quantities required for earthworks material stabilisation resulting in additional 150,000 tC02e.
