*** A WELCOME LETTER FROM THE EDITOR OF CONSTRUCTION NEWS, COLIN MARR ***

Welcome to the CN Awards 2023.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the grand surroundings of the Great Room for this year’s event. As always, we are here to recognise and reward the cream of our industry. In addition to recognising a stream of outstanding projects, teams and individuals, we have an exciting evening’s entertainment lined up.

When thinking about the past year, a phrase from former US president Herbert Hoover springs to mind: “About the time we can make the ends meet, somebody moves the ends.” For construction firms, inflation has dominated the past 12 months. Contractors, particularly those on fixed priced contracts, have faced the nightmare of rising material and labour costs. Times are, undoubtedly, still tough.

As always, however, our industry has risen to the challenge with pragmatism and determination, keeping projects on track and standards high. We have seen innovative adjustments to contract terms and solutions to price challenges negotiated between clients, contractors and subcontractors. The ride has not always been easy, but everyone has pulled together to keep the show on the road.

Tonight, not everyone will be a winner. But all of those on the 2023 CN Awards shortlist can be truly proud of their achievements. With such high industry standards, it is always hard to pick winners, and this year has been no exception. I thank each one of our illustrious army of judges who gave up their time to scrutinise the entries so rigorously.

Tonight, you will witness a procession of inspiring examples of inspiring leadership, mind-boggling logistical organisation and hard graft that have all combined to produce some of the best building schemes you’ll find anywhere in the world. I wish all the best to all those who are up for an award. In such challenging times, your attainments can only make one optimistic for the long-term future of the construction industry.

I hope you enjoy your evening – you’ve deserved it.

Colin Marrs,
