Because We're Blak, by Melody Dia, directed by Rachael Maza

Because We’re Blak is a fast paced blak ‘dramedy’ for 5 actors, combining drama AND comedy; the drama makes us feel, the comedy makes us think but never alienates. We follow the main character of Fran, matriarch of a family that we all know; a hard working single mum who thinks the world’s against her, and it often is; but sometimes you just have to start listening to your family. With gorgeously recognisable characters this story offers the audience a generous insight into a culture clash that is occurring within this family, the everyday struggles they have as Aboriginal Australians, while including the audience as part of their story. Because We’re Blak is clever, accessible theatre for a broad audience, utilising beautiful audio visual design, an evocative soundscape and with an innovative portable set design that supports this story to shine a light on life in Broome today.
