In 1880, the Second International Congress on the Education of the Deaf in Milan endorsed oralism over sign language, accelerating the suppression of Deaf languages around the world. Set in the future of Australia where special schools are being closed at the recommendation of the Disability Royal Commission—threatening vital spaces for the transmission of Auslan and Deaf culture—THE MILAN CONFERENCE draws a powerful connection between past and present struggles for Deaf self-determination. Created by re:group performance collective and DEA[f] Collective, the work is performed entirely in Auslan and combines interpretation, voicing, creative captioning, visual vernacular and video design to create a rich theatrical language accessible to Deaf and hearing audiences alike.

re:group performance collective is an acclaimed independent theatre company comprised of dear friends who work together to make live cinema and contemporary performance. We are Mark Rogers, Solomon Thomas, Malcolm Whittaker and Steve Wilson-Alexander. DEA[f] Collective is a Deaf-led arts force: theatre makers, storytellers and cultural agitators devising and amplifying Deaf culture on our own terms, shaping a new standard for inclusive performance. We honour the legacy of the Australian Deaf Theatre while forging a new era. Led by Dion Galea, Jeremy Lowrenčev, Tony Nicholas, Lauren-Toni Patrick, Joshua Sealy and Felicity Tchorlian, THE MILAN CONFERENCE is the first bold step in our mission.
