This symposium will introduce how Breathing and Movements can be effectively integrated into clinical practice to support improved recovery outcomes for people undergoing stoma surgery. The session will provide an overview of the programme’s principles and outline practical approaches for clinicians to introduce foundational movement strategies during the pre, peri and post‑operative period.

Breathing and Movements is an evidence‑based programme designed to reduce abdominal pressure, support functional recovery, and build confidence through phased education and guided movement. Delegates will gain insight into the Fundamental Five – an accessible, standardised introduction to Breathing and Movements that clinicians can demonstrate easily and patients can adopt early in their recovery journey.

The symposium will explore how Breathing and Movements aligns with current recommendations such as the ASCN UK Exercise and Physical Activity After Stoma Surgery (EXPASS) Best Practice Recommendations, strengthening patients’ belief in their own capability and supporting their return to everyday activities and, where appropriate, more advanced fitness. Real‑life patient stories will illustrate the practical impact of this approach, including a Q&A with stoma patient and ambassador, who will discuss how Breathing and Movements helped form the foundation for her progression from early recovery to taking part in a national‑level fitness challenge.

The session will emphasise why structured, consistent movement guidance matters, outlining positive outcomes associated with the programme. Attendees will leave with increased confidence in communicating movement guidance to patients, demonstrating the Fundamental Five, and adopting a leadership‑focused, lasting‑impact approach to supporting patient rehabilitation.
