Opera for the Dead (祭歌) is a contemporary Chinese cyber-opera dissolving the boundary between life and death. Conceived by guzheng visionary Mindy Meng Wang and sound technologist Monica Lim, it merges ancient ritual with speculative technology to evoke a sonic afterlife. Rooted in Chinese mourning traditions yet speaking to universal grief, the work unfolds as an immersive, multi-sensory installation of live musicians, voice, ambisonic sound, electronics, 3D animation, and movement. Audiences drift through mutable worlds—stage, cinema, dance floor—where memory glitches, ancestors whisper, and the spiritual becomes digital. Opera for the Dead is a requiem reimagined for the algorithmic age.
