Sampai, Tak Sampai by Jumaadi and Michael Toisuta
Arts Market

Information
Sampai, Tak Sampai (to arrive, not to arrive) is an immersive, multi-disciplinary performance work reflecting on global human migration and forced displacement from an Indo-Pacific perspective. Lead artists Jumaadi and Michael Toisuta reimagine the Indonesian tradition of wayang beber – a performance artform originating in Java pre-14th century where scroll paintings are unfurled to narrate a story. Different narratives will be staged like ‘spatial sonic paintings’ where the installation space will be activated with episodic performances. Mixed-media painting, sound, light, video and large-scale projection play key roles, with the audience immersed in the performance; there is no seating bank and people will be guided through the space. We are approaching the final stages of development and plan for the work to be malleable and scalable for various international touring contexts.
