Neanderthal is a new work of contemporary devised theatre. A funny, bold and shrewd work about intelligence and extinction written by Back to Back Theatre's ensemble of artists with intellectual disabilities.
The narrative utilises a story within a story structure. Following an aspirational documentary voice over artist who, while recording new web series, 'The Last of the Neanderthals', is forced to face his own obsolescence. It's a journey of an individual into irrelevance, set against a story of extinction of a species. It’s a complex work that exposes human exceptionalism through the lens of alien abduction; eugenics via a singing competition; and species extinction.
Intended for a large black box or proscenium drama theatre, Neanderthal gives festival goers the opportunity to experience new work from one of Australia’s most globally awarded and idiosyncratic theatre companies.
