Information

Neanderthal is a new work of contemporary devised theatre. A funny, bold and shrewd work about intelligence and extinction written by Back to Back Theatre's ensemble of artists with intellectual disabilities. The narrative utilises a story within a story structure. Following an aspirational documentary voice over artist who, while recording new web series, 'The Last of the Neanderthals', is forced to face his own obsolescence. It's a journey of an individual into irrelevance, set against a story of extinction of a species. It’s a complex work that exposes human exceptionalism through the lens of alien abduction; eugenics via a singing competition; and species extinction. Intended for a large black box or proscenium drama theatre, Neanderthal gives festival goers the opportunity to experience new work from one of Australia’s most globally awarded and idiosyncratic theatre companies.

Reviews
Alison Croggan, The Monthly, 2022. “How to describe Back to Back’s theatre? It’s work that peels away the illusions that sustain us, a kind of psychic cleansing that generates a fugitive sense of freedom and joy. By its end, their audiences are left facing themselves."
