Guided Wave Enhanced Corrosion Monitoring for Carbon Capture & Storage
Information
RIP2025-00072: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pipelines and pipeline systems present significant corrosion control design and operational challenges for asset owners and project developers. Pipeline safety regulations are steadily moving the industry toward “real-time” corrosion monitoring and detailed knowledge of operational conditions that drive corrosion rates within each system. With numerous CCS projects under development globally, state-of-the-the art solutions are needed to effectively address the corrosion threat to safety and reliability.
Guided wave technology has served as an integral component of pipeline inspection and integrity management programs for over 20 years and is now acknowledged within US pipeline safety regulations as an approved integrity assessment method for gas pipelines. Guided wave screening systems have been widely utilized to locate areas of corrosion in difficult-to-inspect applications where other integrity assessment methods such as inline inspection or hydrostatic test are considered impractical. This proven technology can now be deployed to remotely and autonomously monitor lengths of pipe in high-risk areas for internal and external corrosion.
This presentation will discuss the benefits of guided wave large area monitoring and how permanently installed sensors with advanced signal processing can enhance new or existing corrosion control programs for safe and reliable operation of CCS pipeline systems.
