Sonar: Long–range sound projection system

Information

Iregular is known for developing proprietary technology to support the studio’s artistic vision. One of them is SONAR, a long–range sound projection system for immersive experiences. It combines ultrasound technologies, computer vision, artificial intelligence, robotics, an acoustic device and very precise sound design. The main objective is creating an audio system that can direct sound to specific locations or audience members and not others, in a way that prevents sound bleed, does not pollute the physical space with loud sound or imposing speakers, and works from very far distances. The experience of SONAR is truly unique and unlike anything experienced before. The immersion level is so deep that it creates realities that defy audio norms we are used to. The sound beam direction is so precise and unusual, every time it is directed towards a body or an object, one can swear the sound is actually emanating from there, and not the speaker. The ultrasound speaker is rigged to a moving motor which allows us to sonically play with the dimension of space. Sound is of extreme importance in our proposal as it allows us to offer an experience that engages all the senses. Given the physical setting of the project, SONAR will also be extremely useful, as it will prevent sound bleed into other parts of the exhibition thanks to its highly directional sound technology. SONAR has earned recognition from industry professionals with several awards, including: HUB Montréal / HUB Innovation Award 2024 presented by Walt Disney Imagineering IDÉA 2025 / Gold Prize in Digital Products & Experiences
