Gatwick Airport is the United Kingdom’s second largest airport. Located to the south of London, Gatwick has direct road and rail links into the City of London, to the south coast and more than 100 other destinations. Central London can be reached by train in less than 30 minutes.

Prior to the impacts of Covid-19, Gatwick Airport welcomed more than 46 million passengers, travelling to more than 230 long and short-haul destinations with around 50 airlines, making it the busiest single runway in the world in terms of throughput per hour.  Gatwick operations are covered by two terminals, North and South, which are connected by a free and fast transit system.  Like most international airports operating within a limited domestic market, Gatwick has suffered from a reduction of traffic over the past year.  However, there are now positive signs as UK passengers are legally able to travel to specific countries for non-essential reasons since 17 May, using the UK Government’s ‘traffic light’ system.

With the ability to schedule and process 55 movements in its busiest hours, LGW was almost entirely scheduled in both the summer and winter seasons prior to Covid-19. However, despite being devastating for our industry, the pandemic has brought opportunity for new carriers to enter the market at Gatwick as some slots have been returned to the pool. Of course, due to the slot waiver in place for Winter 20, the majority of slots remain with their historic airline - however space and opportunity for new operations does exist for Winter 21.
