About me

Markus Horcher is leading Sustainability & Public Affairs at Borealis since 2021, while he joined the company in 2008 having a variety of management roles in Strategy, Marketing, Quality, Project Management Office and Transformation Management since then. In his current role, Markus is driving the sustainability agenda of Borealis with focus on circular economy and climate neutrality, owns the ESG reporting, is responsible for carbon life cycle management, and drives digitalization projects in carbon management. He is also responsible for Public Affairs, where Borealis works hand in hand with industry associations and authorities to jointly develop a regulatory framework for a sustainable Europe. Furthermore, he manages the Borealis Social Fund where Borealis engages in pro-bono projects in the areas of education & integration, water & energy, and waste & resource efficiency. Within this umbrella, Markus is also responsible for the implementation of Project STOP in Indonesia, a bold initiative that is taking a radical approach to stop environmental leakage by creating comprehensive, economically sustainable waste management systems in areas of high plastic leakage into the ocean and low waste collection coverage. In his earlier career before joining Borealis, Markus worked as a consultant at McKinsey and as Strategy Manager at Sandoz. Markus holds a Master in Microbiology and a PhD in Genetics from the University of Vienna.
