Turning Flare Gas into Power: Powering Potential in Saskatchewan
Information
Steel Reef is a Canadian company that gathers and redistributes wasted emissions to deliver the energy that powers our lives. From its Saskatchewan roots, the company grown into a dominant player in the energy transition, powering homes, communities and industries dedicated to reducing emissions and powering potential. Steel Reef is steadfast in its commitment to deliver even more impact tomorrow than it does today.
To date, Steel Reef has invested more than $1 billion into Saskatchewan, and in 2024, Steel Reef announced an additional $265 million capital investment into the province to provide more than 100 megawatts of carbon-efficient power—enough to power 100,000 homes in Saskatchewan. The company entered into multiple long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with SaskPower to increase electricity capacity by building electricity-generating turbines powered by flare gas to further supply affordable, reliable, low-carbon energy.
For more than a decade, Steel Reef has driven innovation with its emissions-to-energy practice to recover potentially wasted energy, namely flare gas, while reducing emissions. Wells across Saskatchewan and North Dakota produce oil and, historically, the associated gas has been flared into the atmosphere. Steel Reef’s infrastructure captures and transports the associated gas to its natural gas processing facilities to create electricity, natural gas, propane and other products that can be used to manufacture additional end-user products.
Steel Reef manages more than 140 million cubic feet per day of flare gas; over the course of a year, this amount of captured gas is equivalent to displacing emissions from 1.45 million homes per year (Natural Resources Canada). Institutions like the World Bank and the Pembina Institute have identified the need to reduce flaring globally, urging for more investments into flare gas capture. Steel Reef is focused on building utility-grade infrastructure to meet the accelerating energy demand.
With an integrated 2,700-kilometre network across Saskatchewan and North Dakota, Steel Reef is focused on doing its part in increasing oil production by not only reducing emissions through flare gas capture but also optimizing the value of the resulting products by accessing markets across borders. By tying its gas processing assets in Saskatchewan to North Dakota, Steel Reef is able to increase gas supply capacity and provide carbon-efficient and affordable energy in both jurisdictions.
Steel Reef works closely with government agencies in Canada and the U.S. to develop regulations that support innovative solutions for meeting emissions reduction targets related to CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases. As Steel Reef continues to expand, it will continue to confidently invest in infrastructure and the surrounding communities in Saskatchewan and North Dakota, further bolstering Canada-U.S. energy relations.
