In August 2005, NPR's All Songs Considered started doing something most public radio shows hadn't yet figured out: putting episodes into a podcast feed. Two decades later, it's one of the longest-running music podcasts in the country and Robin Hilton has been there for nearly all of it.
This conversation traces that arc: how a public radio segment built for terrestrial broadcast became a podcast-first institution, what changed (and what didn't) when the audience shifted from car radios to earbuds, and what it's meant to build a music-discovery show across three very different eras of audio: broadcast, early podcasting, and the algorithmic streaming present. Robin will talk about the technical and cultural shifts in podcasting itself, what public radio's institutional backing has made possible that an independent podcast couldn't do alone, and what 20+ years of weekly music criticism has taught him about taste, longevity, and audience trust.
