Information

After this session you’ll be able to:

  • Explain how assessing human factors, creating a safety, quality culture and applying effective leadership skills can reduce adverse events, such as retained surgical sponges.
  • Understand the impacts of retained surgical sponges on the patient, operating room staff and hospital.
  • Evaluate adjunct technologies and learn how they can help prevent retained surgical sponges and manage miscounts.

Why this is important:

Kimberly Hoffman will provide a brief review of the problem with retained surgical sponges today, including their economic and clinical implications.  She will share how we, as OR leaders, can help reduce adverse events, such as retained surgical sponges, by assessing human factors, creating a safety, quality culture and applying effective leadership skills. These strategies, along with the use of adjunct technology will result in positive patient outcomes and increase patient safety within the perioperative and L&D space.
