Information
"Attention MOVE: This is AMERICA" is an XR documentary-based experience immersing you in the volatile and emotional build-up to the government-sanctioned bombing of a Philadelphia neighborhood on Mother's Day 1985.
SYNOPSIS:
The project is an immersive experience, utilizing XR technology to transport participants into the heart of the tumultuous events of Mother's Day in Philadelphia 1985. Within a VR environment, users navigate between two-row houses, one occupied by MOVE Revolutionaries and the other by a working/middle-class Black family, amidst a backdrop of escalating tension with law enforcement.
Surrounded by a formidable presence of 500 police officers, including SWAT teams and snipers, and the ominous hum of water cannons, participants will experience palpable chaos as both families defend their beliefs and dignity against the impending confrontation. The immersive journey culminates in the aftermath of the devastating fire caused by a bomb. Participants can pick up personal items such as a wedding ring and family bible from the 1800s and hear stories of their significance from their owners.
The experience transitions from VR to Augmented Reality (AR) unveiling a gallery showcasing the complex history between Philadelphia and MOVE through public documents, government reports, news articles, video footage, books, and biographies. Participants encounter an AI-enabled Virtual Being embodying MOVE member MIKE AFRICA JR. and can ask him questions about MOVE, the bombing, and being a revolutionary. As the experience draws to a close, participants are invited to interact with one another, fostering a collective effort of remembrance and healing.
The XR project aims to provide a transformative platform for experiencing the humanity behind history, offering a unique blend of immersive storytelling, historical documentation, and communal engagement.
