Information

Quantum Computers carry great promised for the future. By exploiting the power of quantum-mechanical principles like tunneling, superposition, entanglement and wave interference, computers van be built that have the (potential) power to solve mathematical problems that cannot be solved by any classical computing system available now or in the near future. Although quantum-mechanics sometimes appears elusive and counter-intuitive, the principles that underlie quantum computers can be very well explained. Since the power of quantum computers scale exponentially with the number of quantum bits, it is expected that we will see an impressive technology development of these systems in the coming years. In this talk, the basic fascinating principles behind quantum computers will shortly be explained, as well as some full stack implementations of Quantum Computers available through the Quantum Inspire cloud. We will then focus on the importance, challenges and opportunities of connecting such QC clouds with HPC networks. Such connections are crucial to accelerate the use of quantum computers, the development of hybrid algorithms. The integration of HPC and QC workflows will be addressed, as well as the various levels of feedback that are required between the HPC system and the quantum computer. Finally we will outline the goals and roadmaps of some ongoing European projects that aim for the integration of classical and quantum workflows.
