Abstract:

In 2015 the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) recommended to establish a sustainable and coordinated HPC infrastructure for German universities. The NHR-Alliance (Nationales Hochleistungsrechnen, NHR) should bring together and further develop the broad HPC expertise and training activities distributed across the German universities and complement the efforts of the Gauss Centres for Supercomputing (Tier-1/0) by providing powerful national Tier-2 compute capabilities.

Following a science driven process, eight high-performance computing centres have been selected to form the NHR-Alliance beginning in 2021. The total funding for a first period of 10 years amounts to 62.5 million euros per year and is jointly provided by the federal and state governments. The goal of the funding is to provide HPC resources at Tier-2 for science throughout Germany, to empower scientists to use HPC resources efficiently for their scientific fields, advancing science and research through high-performance computing and to promote young scientists.

Under the umbrella of the NHR-Alliance, the centres combine and coordinate their individual focus in terms of applications, HPC methods and training activities. Collaborative projects and training programs are central to NHR. A wide range of supporting activities and community building events will be offered.

On our poster we present the governance structure of NHR as part of the German HPC concept for science, and the planned innovations and actions that will support and facilitate the use of high-performance computers easier, more efficient and more attractive for scientists in Germany.
