Abstract:

The EuroHPC initiative is a joint effort by the European Union and 32 countries to establish a leadership-class ecosystem in supercomputing to Europe (read more at https://eurohpc-ju.europa.eu/), complemented by an ambitious research & development program for developing European HPC technology.

One of the first concrete efforts of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is to install the first three "precursor to exascale" supercomputers, complemented by five smaller petascale supercomputers. The pre-exascale systems, Leonardo (Bologna, Italy), Lumi (Kajaani, Finland) and Mare Nostrum 5 (Barcelona, Spain), will be among the most powerful and advanced computing systems on the planet at the time of their general availability in early 2022.

In this BoF session we will discuss the goals and the status of the EuroHPC initiative as well as introduce each of the three pre-exascale systems and the service portfolios they will provide, highlighting their great value and potential for the research community.
