2) Examples of modern and interdisciplinary Education & Training in Pharmacy workforce

The new Initial Education and Training (IET) for pharmacists requires all newly qualified pharmacists to become independent prescribers (IP) from 2026. In addition, legacy Pharmacists (who had graduated but not completed an independent prescriber course in preceding years) can opt to gain an IP qualification. This means that there will be an influx of trainee and new pharmacist prescribers who may need support and supervision for prescribing practice. A modern, interdisciplinary and green (sustainable) model has been developed to support this workforce.

Kent and Medway have created and rolling out a multi-sector rotational training programme for our foundation pharmacists’ workforce. In this session, we discuss the programme and how it aims for junior colleagues to gain broad experiences in clinical practice within key settings of an integrated care system (hospital, community, primary care networks).

Mildred Johnson, Chief Pharmacist/Clinical Director of Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation, Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust & Chair, Kent, Surrey & Sussex Chief Pharmacists & Medicines Management Leads Network
