The Timeless Way of DevOps

In ‘The Timeless Way of Building’ Christopher Alexander conceptualizes a ‘quality without a name’ and encourages the reader to seek this quality. Alexander asserts, ‘There is one timeless way of building. It is thousands of years old, and the same today as it has always been. The great traditional buildings of the past, the villages and tents and temples in which man feels at home, have always been made by people who were very close to the center of this way.’

This presentation will combine research and examples connecting the emergence of modern devops practices and platforms with age-old patterns of human striving for individual and organizational excellence. We’ll construct a modern theory of development, architecture and operations by examining historical practices from pre-industrial, to industrial sociotechnical systems theory and on to building the future.
