What is Intimacy Direction?
Information
What is an Intimacy Director? What do they do? How do we hire them?
Intimacy is a vulnerable part of the human experience that captivates audiences and storytellers. Just like fight choreographers, intimacy directors help in scenes with intimacy to keep actors physically, mentally, and emotionally safe.
Juri Ito, the first Intimacy Director in Japan to be certified for live performance, and Missy Maramara, an Intimacy Director and Coordinator leading the work in the Philippines, work together to present the global concept of Intimacy Direction within the Asian context, including the definition of the job, the tasks and responsibilities, and the hiring process. As the practice of intimacy direction is being slowly but steadily introduced and implemented in Asia, we hope to share our knowledge and expertise to invite more theatre artists to work on creating consent-forward spaces.
Juri and Missy will also be hosting a workshop on the 12th from 1-3PM JST, exploring how intimacy can be explored and discussed in a Japanese and Asian context.
