Description
SPAC will show the new theatre creation, "Otsuya's Love" during this YPAM meeting duration in our Shizuoka Arts Theatre, in Shizuoka. We have performances from Dec. 2 - Dec. 13. The unique feature of this stage is the “storytelling”. “OTSUYA's Love” is a novel written by Junichiro TANIZAKI originally and adapted to the contemporary theatre stage. Actors will speak the lines and the text at the same time. This “storytelling” is also a characteristic of traditional Japanese performing arts, such as Bunraku and Kabuki. You will see a stage performance that combines tradition and modernity with stylistic beauty. On Dec. 2, 10, 11, we provide English subtitles too. This literary work narrates the story of the elopement of Otsuya, the only daughter of a wealthy pawnbroker, and Shinsuke, an apprentice. ISHIGAMI Natsuki, who is directing for the second time at SPAC, following her previous production of MISHIMA Yukio’s “Yoroboshi”, painstakingly interpreted the novel with the actors and staff to explore the connections with the audience living in the present. You will witness the fetishistic expressions and vital love energy extracted from the novel, which would later be recognized as part of aestheticism, and depicted love story that resonates with modern time.
