Information

NPL have developed a system to provide long term monitoring of emissions from industrial sites. The fugitive emission detection system (FEDS) samples emissions from multiple locations around the site and measures them continuously using state-of-the-art fast response gas analyzers. The measurements from the sampling points are combined with daily reverse dispersion modelling to locate fugitive emission locations. A probability map is generated to identify the likely source of the fugitive emissions which can be investigated. The model then calculates the emission rates required to generate the concentrations measured. This provides reliable long-term monitoring of site emissions even if the distribution of sources changes during the measurement period. The FED system has been initially used for the monitoring of methane emissions from various sites around the UK. However, the platform approach can be adapted and widened to other emission gases through the choice of appropriate gas analyzers.
National Physical LaboratoryNational Physical Laboratory - Virtual locationProviding confidence in every aspect of environmental monitoring NPL are the National Measurement Laboratory for the UK and have 800 scientists and 400 laboratories across all science disciplines. Environmental monitoring expertise has been developed by NPL over many years and is a critical aspect of the support we deliver nationally and internationally. We ensure our customers are able to monitor gas emissions reliably and comply with evolving environmental regulations. Our high quality, cost-effective pollution monitoring and analysis services are delivered using unique environmental test facilities. We help industry, research organisations, environmental regulators, government and other measurement providers to evaluate instrument performance, demonstrate conformance with industry-standard protocols and validate instruments in the lab and the field. Our emissions, ambient air sampling and analysis services are accredited to ISO 17025 and all our measurements are traceable to UK national standards, providing you with ultimate confidence in data and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Our expertise and innovation eliminates the need for specialist in-house resources and reduces our customers' technical risk. We deliver revenue, cost and time savings for complex technical challenges. Our unique combination of experts and equipment makes us one of the premier environmental measurement facilities in Europe.
