Gamma-ray bursts are remarkable cosmic explosions. In a matter of seconds, they release the same amount of energy our sun will emit during its entire lifetime. But the bursts are also elusive. Their occurrences are unpredictable, and they disappear too quickly. Scientists had puzzled over the mystery for more than half a century, when in January 2019, a team at the University of Tokyo successfully observed the strongest recorded gamma-ray burst from a ground-based observatory. Are we closer to the truth? The latest findings from the frontlines.
