CONNECTING AND AMPLIFYING A POWERFUL NETWORK OF AFRICAN FEMALE VOICES IN SCIENCE, CONSERVATION AND STORYTELLING. Ten powerful women in conservation science and media from South Africa, Nigeria, Tanzania, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia and Kenya were selected for the NEWF Wild Women Media Lab. From 10th - 22nd August 2020, the cohort engaged in intensive online filmmaking workshops with industry experts and mentors from around the world to guide them through the process of producing a micro-film – a first time experience for all. Each participant was provided with a media making legacy package, allowing them to each develop, film and edit their stories in just a few days. The NEWF Wild Women Media Lab was been designed in partnership with Jackson Wild and was supported by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, American Film Showcase, the United States Mission South Africa and National Geographic Society.

NEWFWhat started out as an annual Congress, NEWF has grown to become an all year round impact and outreach organization. Through an integrated slate of programs, we inspire and incubate emerging science, nature, wildlife and conservation storytellers in digital media in Africa. NEWF is one of the only platforms in Africa addressing the challenges faced by the natural world and driving solutions through impactful creative science communication.  We aim to impact, diversify, and transform the industry by encouraging stories told from African perspectives, by authentic local voices.  The NEWF Congress is our annual gathering and signature event which brings together emerging and experienced filmmakers, storytellers, scientists, conservationists, and media distributors to connect and engage towards a common goal of creating a path to conservation through film.  Dedicated to discovering and amplifying the next generation, the NEWF Labs Program addresses the development and transformation objectives of the organization by fast-tracking specialized professional development for “young” under-represented filmmakers and science communicators.  We advance community outreach and engagement with the NEWF Community Cinema Programme – a mobile pop-up cinema for schools and community film focus groups.
