For over a century, scientists have been exploring Central America in search of the lost cities of the Maya. Archaeologists and explorers alike thought they had discovered most of the vestiges of this fascinating civilization... but they were wrong! Recently in northern Guatemala, the results of an aerial mapping campaign, using an ultra-efficient remote sensing device called “LIDAR", fell like a bombshell in the midst of the scientific community and revealed the presence of over 60,000 previously unknown buildings that no one even suspected existed. Thanks to this latest technology new excavation campaigns will be underway to uncover the real truth behind the incredible world of the Maya.
