Smart Metering - Road Ahead and Road Blocks

In times of COVID-19, smart meters can be highly beneficial to DISCOMs as they enable remote meter reading and bill generation along with remote connection and disconnection. They allow seamless online billing process, real time tracking of electricity usage, and reduction of billing errors.

While smart meters do come with their set of positives, there is a need for DISCOMs to ensure appropriate smart meter design in place coupled with efficient lifecycle management systems to enable remote software updates as well as detection and resolution of potential security and connectivity issues.
