About the Artist

Gary Houston is a graphic designer and illustrator living in Portland, Oregon. He maintains a studio where he makes concept, tour, festival posters and prints under the moniker of Voodoo Catbox. Gary take an old school, hands on approach, specializing in a variety of mediums, including hand drawn ink, scratchboard, and hand cut rubylith to achieve images which he then screen prints, usually in limited editions. Stylistically Gary is swayed by a vast amount of visual influences and disciplines. The work focuses on pretty much all genres of the musical spectrum as he is an avid music junkie.

Voodoo Catbox Printmaking Process

Howdy Folks.  Hope y’all are keeping well and hanging in there.  Like a lot of others, we’ve seen jobs & events we take for granted go by the wayside. So in order to keep busy and stay focused, we figured it might be a good idea to be constructive and make some prints having to do with political or social issues.  We also thought it might be nice to document the process of making a screen print.

We broke this down into 4 segments.  The 1st of which covers the initial concept sketch and transforming that drawing into a scratchboard illustration, which will be the focus of the print.

Part 1 – Illustration
Part 2 – Color Separations
Part 3 – Preparing Screens
Part 4 – Printing
